ISO 5611 boring-bar designation cracked open. Reads left to right - every position tells you something specific about the bar.
First letter - S = steel shank, A = carbide-shank anti-vibration, E = solid carbide. Steel for L/D < 4x, carbide-shank for L/D 4-6x, solid carbide for > 6x.
Two digits - bar shank in millimetres. Common sizes: 06 / 08 / 10 / 12 / 16 / 20 / 25 / 32 / 40. Sleeve / boring-bar holder must match exactly.
Letter code - M 150, P 170, Q 180, R 200, S 250, T 300, U 350 mm. Longer = more L/D, more chatter risk.
First letter of suffix - S = screw clamp (compact, common), P = lever clamp, D = rigid clamp, M = top + screw clamp.
Second letter - C = 80deg rhomb (CCMT), D = 55deg diamond (DCMT), T = triangle (TCMT), V = 35deg (VCMT), W = trigon (WCMT).
Third letter - L = 95deg (most common - straight bores), P = 117.5deg (back-turning), F = 90deg, K = 75deg (heavy roughing).
Fourth letter - clearance angle of insert. C = 7deg (positive geometry, low forces), N = 0deg (negative, double-sided, more economical).
Fifth letter - R = right-hand cutting, L = left-hand, N = neutral. Trailing digits = insert IC code (06 / 09 / 11 / 12 / 16).
Worked example - S16Q-SCLCR09 = Steel - dia 16 mm shank - 180 mm overall - Screw clamp - CCMT 80deg rhomb insert - 95deg lead - 7deg positive insert clearance - Right-hand - IC 09 mm.
