Portable Hardness Testers — Leeb & Rockwell on the Workpiece

Portable hardness testers let you bring metrology to the part rather than the part to the lab. Leeb (rebound) testers like the Insize HDT-CB320 and Yamayo MHT-600 use an impact body that bounces off the workpiece — the ratio of impact-to-rebound velocity translates directly into hardness (HL), which the instrument then converts into the user's preferred scale (HRC, HRB, HV, HB, HS). They're ideal for large castings, forgings, weld seams, and structural steel where bench testing is impossible. Portable Rockwell testers like the Insize ISHR-P151 apply a known load and measure indentation depth directly — closer in principle to a bench Rockwell machine and used where direct ISO 6508 / ASTM E18 traceability is needed.

Coating Thickness Gauges — Magnetic Induction & Eddy Current

Coating thickness gauges measure the thickness of paint, zinc plating, anodising, powder coat or insulating film without damaging the substrate. The two principles — magnetic induction for non-magnetic coatings on ferrous metals (steel, iron) and eddy current for insulating coatings on non-ferrous conductive metals (aluminium, copper) — are now combined into a single auto-detect probe in modern dual-mode gauges like the Laserliner CoatingTest-Master, Yamayo TH-250 and Insize 9501-1200. What is NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) and what instruments do I need?

NDT covers any inspection or measurement that doesn't damage or alter the workpiece. The most commonly used handheld NDT instruments in fabrication, automotive and oil & gas are: portable hardness testers (Leeb or Rockwell) for verifying material spec and heat-treat quality; coating thickness gauges for paint, zinc, anodising and powder-coat QC; and surface roughness testers for verifying machined finishes against design tolerance.

What is the difference between Leeb and Rockwell portable hardness testers?

A Leeb tester (HDT-CB320, MHT-600) measures rebound velocity from an impact body and converts to hardness via lookup tables — very portable, fast, ideal for large or in-situ parts. A portable Rockwell tester (ISHR-P151) applies a known indenter load and reads indentation depth directly — closer in principle to a benchtop Rockwell machine, with more direct ISO 6508 / ASTM E18 traceability. Pick Leeb for speed and accessibility; pick Rockwell for direct scale conformity.

How does a coating thickness gauge work?

Modern dual-mode gauges (Laserliner CoatingTest-Master, Yamayo TH-250, Insize 9501-1200) auto-detect the substrate and switch between two principles: magnetic induction for non-magnetic coatings on ferrous metals (paint or zinc on steel), and eddy current for insulating coatings on non-ferrous conductive metals (anodising on aluminium). The gauge places its probe on the coated surface and reads the coating thickness in microns within a second.

What surface roughness parameters should I measure — Ra, Rz, Rq?

Ra (arithmetic mean roughness) is the most commonly specified parameter and the default on machine-shop drawings. Rz (mean peak-to-valley height) is preferred for sealing surfaces and where peak height matters more than average roughness. Rq (RMS roughness) is statistically more sensitive to outliers and used in precision optics and bearing applications. The Mitutoyo SJ-210 reports all three plus the full Rk family of parameters per ISO 4287 / 16859.

Are calibration certificates available for these instruments?

Yes. Can the Leeb hardness tester be used on small or thin parts?

Leeb testers have minimum mass and thickness requirements (typically >5 kg part mass and >25 mm wall thickness for a D-probe). For thinner or smaller parts, you can either couple the part to a heavier base, switch to a different impact device (C, DC), or move to a portable Rockwell tester (ISHR-P151) which uses a clamping fixture and has no minimum-mass requirement.

Do these coating thickness gauges work on plastic substrates?

No. Both magnetic-induction and eddy-current principles require a metallic substrate. For coatings on plastic or non-conductive bases you'd need an ultrasonic coating thickness gauge — we can source these on request, just message us with your application.

Is the Mitutoyo SJ-210 178-563-01A genuine Mitutoyo Japan?
