Thread Standards Decoder
Eight thread forms cover 95% of UAE workshop and maintenance work.
The default for European and Asian engineering. M10 implies 1.5 mm pitch. Used everywhere from machine assemblies to fasteners.
Smaller pitch on the same diameter, e.g. M10 x 1.0 instead of 1.5. Stronger in thin-wall components and vibration-prone assemblies.
American/imperial coarse pitch. 1/4-20 = 1/4" diameter, 20 threads per inch. The US default for general fasteners and tooling.
Imperial fine pitch. 1/4-28 instead of 1/4-20. Used in aerospace, automotive and high-vibration assemblies.
Whitworth thread (55° flank vs 60° for Metric/UN). Standard on heritage British plant and pipework. Common on legacy mining and oilfield kit.
BSPP (G) = parallel for sealing washers. BSPT (Rc/R) = tapered for thread-seal joints. Sizes from 1/8" to 4". Default UAE pipework standard.
National Pipe Taper. Tapered thread that seals on engagement. Common on US-spec hydraulics, instrumentation, and pneumatics.
29° (ACME) or 30° (metric Tr) flank, used for power transmission — lead screws, jack screws, vice spindles.
Selector Guide — Match Your Job to the Right Tool
Quick reference to pick the correct threading tool for common UAE workshop tasks.
| Job | Recommended Tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Through-hole tapping in mild steel (M6–M16) | Straight-flute machine tap, DIN 376 | Chips push forward through the hole — fast and clean. |
| Blind-hole tapping in alloy steel | Spiral-flute machine tap (40° helix) | Lifts chips out of the hole. Prevents jamming and tap breakage. |
| Hand-tapping in fitting work | HSS 3-piece hand tap set (taper / second / plug) | Taper starts the thread square; plug finishes blind holes to bottom. |
| Pipe threads on hydraulic fittings | BSPT or NPT pipe tap | Tapered form seals on engagement — standard for fluid lines. |
| External threads on a stud or rod | HSS round split die, DIN 223 | Adjustable for tight or loose fit. Cut with a die stock or holder. |
| Single-point external threads on a lathe | Brazed threading tool (ISO 13) or threading insert holder | For long runs, tight pitch tolerance, or non-standard pitches. |
| Threads in stainless steel | Spiral-point or spiral-flute tap, TiN coated | Reduces friction and built-up edge; helps with stainless work-hardening. |
| Restoring damaged external threads | Round split die in a die stock | Adjustable diameter chases a damaged thread back to size. |
| UNC / UNF imperial threads | Imperial hand tap set or imperial machine tap | Match the original drawing or replacement part exactly. |
| Trapezoidal / ACME lead screws | Brazed turning tool, ground to thread profile | Single-point cut allows custom pitch, depth, and lead control. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a hand tap and a machine tap?
Hand taps are designed to be turned slowly by a tap wrench. They have shallow flutes and come in 3-piece sets (taper, second, plug). Machine taps are powered, designed to run continuously in a tapping head, drill press, or CNC lathe at 100–1500 RPM. Use hand taps for fitting and maintenance, machine taps for production.
Straight flute vs. spiral flute — which tap should I use?
Straight flute taps are best for through-holes in steel and cast iron. Spiral flute taps (35–45° helix) are designed for blind holes and stainless — the helical flutes lift chips back out of the hole, preventing jamming and tap breakage.
What does "DIN 352" or "DIN 376" mean on a tap?
DIN 352 = HSS hand taps, 3-piece sets. DIN 371 = short machine taps for blind holes. DIN 374 = machine taps for metric fine. DIN 376 = standard-length machine taps for metric coarse. DIN 5156/5157 = pipe (BSP) taps. Matching the DIN reference keeps replacements interchangeable across brands.
What size tap drill do I need for a metric thread?
For metric coarse, tap drill = nominal diameter − pitch. M10 x 1.5 needs an 8.5 mm drill, M12 x 1.75 needs 10.2 mm, M6 x 1.0 needs 5.0 mm. For BSP pipe threads use the manufacturer's chart — the formula doesn't apply to tapered threads.
What's the difference between BSP, BSPT, NPT and NPTF?
BSPP (G-series) = parallel, seals at the face with a bonded washer. BSPT (R/Rc-series) = 1:16 taper, seals on threads with PTFE tape. NPT = American taper, 60° thread angle vs BSPT's 55°. NPTF = dryseal NPT, no tape needed. UAE plumbing is mostly BSP; US equipment is NPT.
How do I cut threads on a stud, bolt or external rod?
Use a round split die in a die stock. Chamfer the end, oil the die, and turn it onto the rod. The split allows diameter adjustment via the side screw. For long runs, single-point thread on a lathe with a brazed threading tool (ISO 13) or threading insert holder.
Why do my taps keep breaking in stainless steel?
Three common causes: (1) Wrong tap geometry — switch to spiral-flute that lifts chips out. (2) Insufficient cutting fluid — use heavy sulphurised oil. (3) Wrong speed — stainless runs at 5–10 m/min surface speed. A TiN-coated 35° spiral tap run wet at the right speed will tap stainless reliably.
Do you stock left-hand taps and dies?
Yes — left-hand metric, UNC, UNF, BSW, BSP and BSPT are all available on order. Send us the size, pitch and standard for a quote in AED.
What HSS grade should I look for in a tap?
HSS-E (also called HSS-Co or M35) contains 5–8% cobalt for higher red-hardness. Plain HSS (M2) is fine for hand tapping mild steel and brass. For stainless or production CNC tapping, use HSS-E with TiN or TiCN coating. For aluminium, plain HSS uncoated is best.
What's the lead, pitch and TPI of a thread?
Pitch = distance from one thread crest to the next (mm). TPI = threads per inch (imperial). 1 mm pitch = 25.4 TPI. Lead = distance the screw advances per full turn. For single-start threads, lead = pitch.
Can I use a tap to chase or repair a damaged internal thread?
Yes — a second tap or purpose-made thread chaser removes burrs and cleans the existing thread. Use cutting oil and back out every half turn. For badly damaged threads, drill out and use a thread insert (Helicoil/Recoil).
Do you supply taps and dies for special pitches or BA threads?
Yes. We source BA, ACME, Trapezoidal (Tr), Buttress, and UNS specials on factory order. Lead time typically 2–4 weeks for non-stock pitches. Send us the drawing or thread spec for a quote.
