Setting Up a Machine Shop in UAE: Essential Tooling Checklist

Setting Up a Machine Shop in UAE: Essential Tooling Checklist

What you need to stock, specify, and source before you cut your first chip — a practical guide for new UAE manufacturers.

The UAE’s industrial expansion under MIITE 2026 and Operation 300bn has accelerated new machine shop setups across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and the northern emirates. Industrial zones — ICAD, KIZAD, DIP, Sharjah Industrial — are filling with Tier-2 and Tier-3 manufacturers setting up CNC turning and milling capacity for the first time. This guide covers the essential tooling you need from day one.

Step 1: Define Your Work Material Range

Before purchasing a single insert, define the 2–3 primary materials you will be machining. UAE manufacturers most commonly work with:

  • Mild steel (S235/S355, EN3): Structural components, brackets, frames — easiest to machine, forgiving of parameter variation
  • Stainless steel (304/316L): Food, oil & gas, medical components — demands PVD-coated M-grade inserts
  • Aluminium (6061/7075): Aerospace skins, electronic enclosures — requires high-helix end mills and diamond-polished flutes
  • Alloy steel (4140/4340, H13): Tooling, moulds, heavy engineering — needs tough CBN or cermet inserts for hardened states

Your material range determines every tooling decision that follows: insert grade, geometry, coating, and cutting parameters.

Step 2: Turning Tooling (Lathe)

External Turning

For a general-purpose turning centre, stock these insert shapes as a minimum:

  • CNMG 120408 (80° diamond) — general roughing on mild steel and stainless
  • TNMG 160408 (60° triangle) — profiling and semi-finishing
  • VBMT 160404 (35° diamond) — finishing and profiling, tight corners
  • DCMT 070204 (55° diamond) — finishing passes, internal bores on small bars

Parting and Grooving

  • MGMN 300 (3mm width) parting blade — standard bar parting
  • MGMN 200 (2mm width) — thin sections, small-diameter bar
  • GTN-3 for grooving on OD profiles

Threading

  • 16ER AG60 external threading insert — M and unified threads
  • 16IR AG60 internal threading insert — bored thread forms
  • 16ER 1.5 ISO for metric fine thread on 316 stainless hydraulic fittings

Step 3: Milling Tooling

Face Milling

  • 50mm face mill with SEET/APKT inserts — facing, squaring, stock removal
  • 63mm face mill — wider stock removal on larger fixtures

End Milling

  • 4-flute 10mm TiAlN-coated end mill — steel pocketing, slots, profiles
  • 4-flute 16mm end mill — general steel milling
  • 3-flute 10mm polished (DLC or uncoated) — aluminium only
  • 2-flute ball nose 6mm — 3D profiling, pocket floors

Step 4: Hole Making

  • HSS-Co drill set (1–13mm) — general steel and stainless drilling
  • Solid carbide drill 6mm and 8mm — higher precision holes, stainless
  • Centre drill set (A-type) — spotting before drilling
  • Thread taps M6, M8, M10 (machine taps, spiral flute for blind holes) — most common fastener threads in UAE fabrication
  • HSS reamer set 6H7 and 8H7 — critical-fit bores

Step 5: Measurement and Inspection

Good tooling without good measurement produces scrap. Your day-one metrology kit:

  • 150mm digital vernier calliper — general inspection
  • 0–25mm / 25–50mm / 50–75mm outside micrometer set
  • Digital height gauge 300mm — setup and first-off inspection
  • Dial test indicator 0.001mm resolution — runout, parallelism checks
  • Telescoping bore gauges — internal diameters
  • Surface roughness tester — if surface finish is a customer requirement

Mitutoyo instruments (available through SAN Tools) are accepted across ADNOC, EDGE, and most UAE OEM quality systems.

Step 6: Workholding and Clamping

  • 3-jaw self-centring chuck (K11 type) — standard lathe workholding
  • 4-jaw independent chuck (K72 type) — irregular and off-centre parts
  • Machine vice 125mm — milling centre workholding
  • Parallel set and step block clamping kit — flexible workholding

Step 7: Adhesives and Thread Locking

Often overlooked: Threadlocking, retaining compounds, and structural adhesives are standard in UAE precision manufacturing but frequently not included in initial equipment budgets. Loctite threadlockers (242, 243, 262, 270) prevent vibration-induced loosening on machine assemblies — essential for equipment installed in the UAE’s high-temperature environment.
  • Loctite 243 — medium-strength threadlocker for general fastener locking
  • Loctite 270 — high-strength threadlocker for permanent assemblies
  • Loctite 638 — retaining compound for sleeve/shaft assemblies

Where to Source in the UAE

SAN Tools stocks all of the above — cutting inserts, end mills, drills, taps, Mitutoyo instruments, workholding, and Loctite — from UAE inventory. No overseas lead times, AED invoicing, and same-week delivery across the UAE. As a UAE-registered supplier, purchases contribute to your ICV score for government procurement purposes.
