A part that machines beautifully but measures out of tolerance is scrap, and an instrument that reads 0.02 mm out is worse than no instrument at all — because you trust it. Accuracy, Resolution and Repeatability — What the Numbers Actually Mean
Instrument specifications are quoted three different ways, and confusing them is the most common reason a workshop buys the wrong gauge. Resolution is the smallest increment the instrument can display — a 0.01 mm caliper shows hundredths. Accuracy is how far the reading may sit from the true value, quoted as a tolerance such as ±0.03 mm. Repeatability is whether you get the same number twice on the same feature.
A digital caliper reading to 0.01 mm does not measure to 0.01 mm — its accuracy is typically ±0.02 to ±0.03 mm over 150 mm. If your drawing tolerance is ±0.05 mm you are fine. If it is ±0.01 mm you need a micrometer, which achieves roughly ±0.002 mm over a 25 mm span. The working rule most quality systems apply is the 10:1 ratio: the instrument should resolve to about one tenth of the tolerance you are checking. For a ±0.05 mm feature, a 0.01 mm caliper is right. For ±0.01 mm, you want an instrument resolving to 0.001 mm.
Standards worth knowing
Micrometers are manufactured to DIN 863, calipers to DIN 862 and ISO 3611 governs micrometer design. Mitutoyo and Insize both publish accuracy figures against these standards, which is what makes them defensible in an audit. If you are supplying into oil and gas, aerospace or medical work, raise calibration documentation when you order — it has to be arranged with the instrument, not after it.

Mitutoyo is the reference standard. Japanese-made, with the accuracy specification you want behind a first-article inspection or a customer audit. Insize gives you genuine specification compliance at a working price, which is why it makes up the largest part of this collection. For a shop kitting out several machines, or replacing instruments that walk off, Insize is usually the sensible call: DIN 863 micrometers, dial and digital indicators, and a very deep gauge range — feeler, radius, thread, weld, taper and chamfer — that is difficult to source elsewhere in the UAE.
SAN Tools own-brand covers the consumable end: feeler gauge sets, spring calipers, dividers, squares, magnetic bases and general-purpose micrometers. These are the instruments that get shared, dropped and lost, and paying Japanese prices for them makes no sense.

Are your Mitutoyo instruments genuine?
Yes. SAN Tools is an authorised distributor and Mitutoyo instruments are supplied through the official channel with their original packaging and documentation.
What is the difference between a caliper and a micrometer?
A caliper is versatile — outside, inside, depth and step measurement in one tool — with accuracy around ±0.02 to ±0.03 mm. A micrometer does one thing, over a 25 mm span, to roughly ±0.002 mm. Use a caliper for general work and a micrometer whenever the tolerance is tighter than about ±0.02 mm.
Which gauge do I need for a bore under 18 mm?
A dial bore gauge will not reach. Use a small hole gauge (split-ball type) or a telescoping gauge to transfer the dimension, then measure the gauge across a micrometer. Insize 4208 and 4206 series cover this range, and the Mitutoyo 511-201 small-hole bore gauge handles 10–18.5 mm directly.
Do you stock imperial as well as metric?
Yes. Most caliper, micrometer and indicator lines are stocked in both, and many digital instruments switch between the two. Tell us which you need when you order — the model numbers differ.
