First Article Inspection in UAE Defence Manufacturing: What You Need
A practical guide for EDGE Group, Strata, and NIMR Tier-2 suppliers — from AS9100D requirements to the measurement tools that pass FAI.
First Article Inspection (FAI) is a formal verification process that a new or modified manufacturing process will produce parts that meet all engineering design requirements. In UAE defence and aerospace manufacturing — particularly for EDGE Group Tier-2 suppliers, Strata MRO work, and NIMR vehicle components — FAI is not optional. It is contractually required under AS9100D and, for certain programmes, NADCAP. Getting your FAI process right from the start saves weeks of rework and protects your supplier approval status.
What Is First Article Inspection (FAI)?
FAI is defined in AS9102 (Aerospace First Article Inspection Requirement). It documents that a part produced by a specific manufacturing process — on a specific machine, by a specific operator, using specific tooling and materials — conforms to all dimensions, tolerances, materials, and surface finish requirements of the engineering drawing.
The key distinction from routine inspection: FAI is process validation, not just part inspection. It validates that your process can reliably produce conforming parts — not just that one part happened to pass.
The AS9102 FAI Package: What You Must Submit
A complete FAI package under AS9102 consists of three primary sections:
Section 1 — Design Documentation
- Current revision drawing with all applicable notes and callouts
- List of all applicable specifications and standards referenced on the drawing
- Engineering change order (ECO) traceability if the part is a revision
- Bubble-numbered drawing with each dimension uniquely identified
Section 2 — Material and Process Documentation
- Material certification (CoC) traceable to heat/lot number
- Chemical and mechanical properties test report
- Process specification conformance records (heat treatment, surface treatment, plating, NDT)
- NADCAP special process approvals (if applicable to your process)
Section 3 — Dimensional Inspection Data
- Measurement results for every balloon-numbered dimension on the drawing
- Traceability of all measurement equipment (calibration certificates)
- Gauge R&R (measurement system analysis) for critical characteristics
- Non-conformance disposition (if any dimension is outside tolerance)
Measurement Equipment Requirements for FAI
Every measurement in an FAI package must be taken with calibrated, traceable equipment. UAE defence suppliers typically need the following instruments — all calibrated to UKAS, DAkkS, or equivalent national standards:

Common FAI Failures — and How to Avoid Them
- Missing bubble numbers on drawing: Every dimension submitted in the inspection data package must correspond to a bubble number on the drawing. Prepare the bubble drawing before you start measuring.
- Out-of-calibration equipment used: Check calibration due dates before starting your FAI measurement run. An FAI signed off with an expired calliper will be rejected.
- Material certificate not lot-traceable: CoC must trace to the specific heat/lot used for the first article — not just the material specification. Buy from distributors who can provide heat-traced CoCs.
- Gauge R&R skipped for critical characteristics: AS9100D customer requirements often mandate Gauge R&R (ANOVA or range method) for safety-critical or key characteristics. If your drawing has KC or SC callouts, plan for GR&R from the start.
- FAI documentation not revision-controlled: Your FAI package is a controlled quality record. Use your document control system — free-form Word documents without revision numbers will fail EDGE Group QA audits.
