Features

  • DORMER HSS Taper Shank Drill, model A130, fitted with a Morse taper shank instead of a straight/cylindrical shank, allowing the drill to mount directly into the tapered spindle bore of a drill press, milling machine or lathe tailstock without needing a chuck
  • Purpose-built for large-diameter hole drilling — the range covers 16.5mm, 19.0mm, 22.5mm and 37.0mm cutting diameters, sizes that are impractical or impossible to hold securely in a standard chuck
  • The self-locating taper seats directly against the machine spindle taper, and the flattened tang at the end of the shank engages a slot in the spindle to prevent the drill from spinning under the heavy cutting torque generated at these larger diameters
  • Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) for toughness and wear resistance when drilling structural steel, plate and general engineering materials at large diameters
  • Removing the drill only requires a drift/wedge driven through the spindle slot, making tool changes on the machine straightforward despite the taper fit

How to Use

Clean the taper shank and the machine's taper socket, then insert the drill directly into the matching Morse taper bore of the drill press spindle, milling machine spindle or lathe tailstock, using a reducing sleeve or adapter if the drill's taper size differs from the machine's socket size. Ensure the tang at the end of the shank is correctly located in the spindle slot so the drill cannot spin freely under load. Run the machine at a reduced spindle speed appropriate to the large cutting diameter, and feed steadily while applying a continuous flow of cutting fluid to manage heat and extend tool life. On deeper holes, retract the drill periodically to clear swarf from the flutes and avoid overheating or binding. Always clamp the workpiece securely, as the larger diameters and taper-mounted rigidity of this drill generate substantially higher cutting torque than standard straight-shank drills. To remove the drill, use a drift or wedge through the spindle slot to release the taper rather than pulling directly on the drill body.
