DORMER Half-Shank (Reduced Shank) Drill UAE
Features
- DORMER half-shank (reduced-shank) HSS drills, purpose-built for large-diameter hole drilling where the required drill diameter is bigger than the capacity of a standard drill chuck
- The shank is machined down to a smaller diameter than the flute/cutting body, so a large-diameter drill can still be gripped and driven by an ordinary 10mm or 13mm capacity chuck instead of needing an oversized or keyless large-bore chuck
- Range covers 14mm, 16mm, 19.5mm and 25mm cutting diameters, giving good coverage for structural, clearance and fabrication holes that exceed common jobber drill sizes
- Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) for a practical balance of toughness, wear resistance and edge retention across mild steel, structural steel and general fabrication materials
- Straight (parallel) flutes and a conventional twist-drill point geometry make these drills compatible with standard pillar drills, bench drills, radial arm drills and hand-held drill machines that accept round-shank tooling
- Reduced shank design keeps overall tool cost and machine investment down, since workshops do not need to purchase specialised large-bore chucks purely to run oversized drill diameters
How to Use
Select a drill press, pillar drill or heavy-duty hand drill fitted with a chuck rated for the reduced shank diameter of the drill (commonly 10mm or 13mm capacity), even though the cutting diameter itself is larger than the chuck jaws could normally hold. Insert the shank fully into the chuck jaws and tighten securely, checking that the drill runs true with minimal wobble before starting, since the mismatch between shank size and cutting diameter means clamping force is critical to prevent slipping under load. Centre-punch the workpiece, then drill at a reduced spindle speed appropriate to the larger cutting diameter, applying steady, even feed pressure and a continuous supply of cutting fluid or coolant to control heat build-up and extend tool life. On deeper holes, periodically withdraw the drill to clear swarf from the flutes and prevent the tool from binding or overheating. Always secure the workpiece in a vice or clamp rather than holding it by hand, since larger-diameter drilling generates significantly more cutting torque than standard jobber drills.
