ISO 1832 packs the insert shape, clearance, tolerance, type, IC size, thickness and corner radius into a single 7-character string. Once you know the alphabet, you can read any insert at a glance.

What is a carbide insert and how does it work?
A carbide insert is a replaceable cutting edge made from cemented tungsten carbide that clamps into a steel toolholder. When one cutting edge wears, you rotate (index) the insert to a fresh corner without re-grinding.
How do I read an ISO insert code like CNMG 120408?
Each character is position-based per ISO 1832: C = 80° rhombic shape, N = 0° clearance (negative), M = M-tolerance, G = hole with chip-breaker both faces, 12 = 12.7 mm IC, 04 = 4.76 mm thickness, 08 = 0.8 mm corner radius.
What's the difference between negative and positive inserts?
Negative inserts (CNMG, WNMG, TNMG) have 0° clearance and are double-sided — ideal for heavier roughing. Positive inserts (CCMT, DCMT, VCMT) cut more freely with lower force — preferred for finishing, boring and lower-power machines.
Which Sandvik grade should I choose for steel turning?
GC4325 is the first-choice grade for general steel turning. GC4315 handles higher cutting speeds; GC4335 handles interrupted cuts. For stainless steel switch to GC2025 or GC1115.
What does the chip-breaker code (PR / PM / PF / MA / MS) mean?
PR/MR = roughing, deep cuts. PM/MM = medium, general purpose. PF/MF = finishing, light depths. MA/MS/MQ are tuned for ISO M (stainless) to reduce work-hardening and built-up edge.
Can I use a Deskar insert in a Sandvik holder?
Yes — insert codes follow ISO 1832, which is brand-neutral. A CNMG 120408 from Deskar fits the same MCLNR/PCLNR/DCLNR holder as Sandvik. Differences are in the carbide grade, coating and chip-breaker, not the seat dimensions.
